Sex Offenders Act 1997

Part I sets out the notification requirements for sex offenders. Section 1 describes the type of sex offenders subject to notification requirements and Section 2 relates to the effect of the notification requirements. Section 3 lists the offences. Section 4 addresses young sex offenders. Section 4(2) and s.4(4) relates to a person who is under 18 years of age. Section 5 states the certificates that the court will make for the purposes of Part I. Section 5 describes where Part I applies, this includes those convicted of a sexual offence (s.5(1)(a)), those found not guilty of such an offence by reason of insanity (s.5(1)(b)) and those under a disability and to have done the act charged against them (s. 5(1)(c)). Section 6 provides interpretation.
Part II applies to sexual offences committed outside the United Kingdom. Section 7 addresses the extension of jurisdiction in England and Wales and Northern Ireland. Section 8 relates to the extension of jurisdiction in Scotland.
Part III contains the supplemental provisions. Section 9 applies to The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

- Section 1(b) applies to children and relates to the Indecency with Children Act 1960, s.1(c) applies to s.54 of Criminal Law Act 1977 (inciting girl under 16 to have incestuous sexual intercourse), s1(d) applies to the Protection of Children Act 1978.
- Section 4 makes reference to the Children Act 1978.

- Section 1(a) lists the offences including intercourse with girl under 13 (s.1(a)(ii)), intercourse with a girl aged between 13 and 16 (s.1(a)(iii)), buggery (s.1(a)(iv)), indecent assault on a girl (s.1(a)(v)), indecent assault on a boy (s.1(a)(vi)) and assault with intent to commit buggery (s.1(a)(vii)).
