REMAND HOMES 1933 No. 987

Regulation 5 requires that remand homes shall be open to inspection at all times by or on behalf of the Chief Inspector.  Regulation 6 provides that care shall be taken separate any boy who may be likely to exercise a bad influence over others.  Regulation 7 generally requires separation of boys and girls although does provide some exceptions.  Regulation 8 provides that each boy is to sleep in a separate bed.  Regulation 9 provides that boys shall be supplied with sufficient and varied food.  Regulation 10 explains that boys’ shall wear their own clothing but where desirable on sanitary or other ground suitable clothing shall be supplied.

Other provisions include that all boys must be thoroughly cleansed on admission (Regulation 11), there are restrictions on boys under 12 doing work with the exception of light work (Regulation 12), two hours minimum per day to be set aside for recreation and exercise (Regulation 13), details of worship arrangements (Regulation 14), discipline in remand homes (Regulation 15), methods for punishment (Regulation 16), details regarding medical treatment (Regulation 17), reporting a death or serious illness (Regulation 18), visits and inspections (Regulation 19) and facilities to contact with relatives and friends (Regulation 20).

Regulation 21 imposes a requirement that a register of admissions and log book is kept.
