Employment Act 1989

The Act is used to amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and incorporates the European Directive No. 76/207/EEC.  This includes the implementation of the principle for equal treatment for men and women.  Amendments also include the repealing or amending prohibitions or requirements relating to the employment of young persons and other categories of employees.

Section 10 sets out the removal of restrictions relating to employment of young persons.  This includes hours of employment and holiday.  Section 10(6) defines the school leaving age.  Reference is made to Schedule 3.

SCHEDULES

Schedule 3 provides details on the removal of restrictions relating to the employment of young persons.

Part I apply to repeals relating to the restrictions with respect to hours of employment and holidays.

Part II addresses repeals relating to other requirements.  This includes reference to the Factories Act 1961 and the duty of factory occupier to give notice of employment of young persons.

Part III sets out the amendment of certain age limits.  Section 1 relates to the employment of women, young persons and the Children Act 1920.  Section 2 gives details on amendments to the Children and Young Person Act 1933.
