Disability Discrimination Act 1995

Section 1 gives the meaning of ‘disability’ and a ‘disabled person.’ Section 2 applies to those who have had previous disabilities. Section 3 lists the matters that are to be taken into consideration in order to determine whether a person has a disability.
Part II addresses employment (s.4 – 7). Section 6 imposes a duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments.
Part III addresses discrimination in other areas. Provisions for providing Goods facilities and services (s.19 – 21) incorporate the meaning of discrimination (s.20) and a duty of providers of services to make reasonable adjustments (s. 21). Discrimination in relation to premises is included (s.22-24) this includes an exception for small dwellings (s.23). Details regarding enforcement, remedies and procedure are also explained (s.25 – 28).
Part IV applies to education (s.29 – s. 31). Provisions include education of disabled people (s.29), further and higher education of disabled people (s.30) and further and higher education of disabled people in Scotland (s.31).
Part V addresses public transport. This includes taxis (s.32 – s.39), public service vehicles (s.40 – s.45) and rail vehicles (s. 46 – 47).
Part VI relates to the National Disability Council (s.50 – 52) this includes the codes of practice prepared by the council (s.51).
Part VII is a supplemental section. This includes provisions regarding the Codes of practice prepared by the Secretary of State (s. 53), details on victimisation (s.55), help for persons suffering discrimination (s. 56) and aiding unlawful acts (s. 57).
