Criminal Justice Act 1988

Part 1 applies to extradition (s.1 – 22).  Part II sets out provisions regarding documentary evidence in criminal proceedings (s.23 – s. 28).  Part III sets out other provisions about evidence in criminal proceedings. This includes issue of letters of request (s. 29), expert reports (s. 30), form of evidence and glossaries (s. 31), evidence through television links (s. 32), evidence of persons under 14 in committal proceedings (s. 33) and a provision for abolition of requirement of corroboration for unsworn evidence of children (s. 34).

Part V applies to jurisdiction, imprisonment, and fines etc.  Section 45 provides an increase in maximum term of imprisonment for cruelty to children and young persons.

Part IX sets out provisions in regard to young offenders.  This includes custodial sentences for young offenders (s. 123), abolition of power of courts to commit juvenile to remand centre instead of local authority care (s. 125), amendment of section 53(2) of Children and Young Persons Act 1933 (s. 126), payment of fine by parent or guardian (s. 127), supervision (s. 128), signature of orders relating to detention of young offenders (s. 129) and computation of sentence, time passes in care of local authority in accommodation provided for restricting liberty.

Part X gives details relating to probation and the probation service. This includes provisions relating to the hostel conditions for bail (s. 131) and the administration of the probation service etc. (s. 132).

Provisions regarding the possession of indecent photograph of child are covered in Sections 160 and 161.  Section 160 sets out provisions relating to the summary offence of possession of indecent photograph of child.
