Three prosecuted for running “brothel”

July 2nd, 2010 by Malcolm

Get Surrey reports that three people, a man and two women have been accused of various offences related to the running of an alleged brothel in Woking and money laundering.

Brothel keeping is covered by a number of statutes. Section 3 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 makes it an offence to allow a child under sixteen into a brothel.

The Sexual Offences Act 1956 also has a number of sections dealing with prostitution. Sections 22 to 31 deal with prostitution and procuration, whilst Sections 33 to 36 contain the prohibitions against keeping a brothel. Dealing with the proceeds of prostitution are covered by Acts such as the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005.

More recently the Policing and Crime Act 2009 introduced a new offence into the Sexual Offences Act 2003 of paying for the services of a prostitute subjected to force.

Prostitution taking place on the street is covered by the Street Offences Act 1959.
