Jersey authorities deny compensation to victims of child abuse
On the 20th January 2010, I reported that two men convicted of abusing children in homes owned by the Jersey authorities had launched convictions against their appeal. I also reported that a group of victims were putting together compensation claims.
I have just been informed by Tracey Emmott of Emmott Snell & Co. that she acts for eight such clients. She has also referred me to an article in the Daily Telegraph. Apparently the Jersey authorities are refusing compensate victims of child abuse because their laws do not allow claim to be brought after a certain date. The limitation laws in England and Wales are a great deal more generous. See the landmark House of Lords case of A v Hoare 2008 and also more recently, the case of Raggett v the Society of Jesus Trust and Others 2009.
