Gloucestershire school teacher gaoled for abuse
This is Gloucester reports on the conviction of a primary school teacher for indecently assaulting a child and possession of images of child abuse.
The former teacher was initially arrested in November 2009 following intelligence provided from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre. After local media reported the initial prosecution in respect of ‘indecent images of children’, a member of the public contacted the police to report sexual abuse that had happened to her as a child between 1997 and 1999.
This case demonstrates the way in which media coverage of a prosecution, can bring other victims forward. The convicted man’s victim might also have a claim in compensation again him, although normally limitation on her claim would have expired on her 21st birthday. Nonetheless after the case of A v Hoare 2008 this time limit is relaxed in certain “exceptional” cases.
The victims might also have a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority a government organisation set up to compensate victims of crime.
