Autistic boy dies after drinking bleach

February 11th, 2010 by Malcolm

The BBC reports that a 44 year old mother is being questioned in connection with her son’s death from ingestion of “caustic liquid”. The boy was taken to hospital but died later. Another boy was found at the mother’s property and he has been taken into care.

The abuse of children varies from emotional abuse right up to murder. A claim can be brought for what is known as a “fatal accident” by the child’s parents in certain circumstances, and the child’s estate can make a claim for pain and suffering inflicted up to the point of death. However the law prevents the parent who is responsible for that death from bringing a compensation claim. Very often such claims are not worth very much money, and there is no one to bring them. That is to be distinguished from the case of a child abused over a period of years, who is still alive.
