Parents Sue buggy firm for injuries

December 15th, 2009 by Malcolm

It was reported by the BBC today that a group of some 15 UK families are intending to sue Maclaren for injuries sustained by their children. The parent’s are claiming that Maclaren knew that it’s products had injured children, but continued to ignore warnings that others could get hurt.

The children’s injuries mainly consist of fingertips being cut off or sliced in the folding hinge mechanism, for which Maclaren is now distributing covers. It is reported that Maclaren knew of this fault as far back as 18 months ago, and had already recalled products in the USA, where 12 children had suffered similar injuries.

Although compensation for these types of injuries is likely to be relatively small, it is still very distressing for the children and parents who have fallen victim to these allegedly faulty products. The outcome of this lawsuit will be interesting. The question is, of course, has Maclaren done enough to avoid paying out for causing these injuries? And if it has, is compensation what these families are looking for?
