Paedophile watched child being abused

August 2nd, 2009 by Malcolm

2nd August 2009

The Shields Gazette reports the conviction of a man who watched on a webcam as a nine year old girl was abused by her grandfather. The abuse took place in the United States. The girl has been taken into care, but has suffered severe mental health problems. Her abuser is serving a 18 year prison sentence.

The convicted man was arrested after cooperation between the FBI and Northumbria police and sentenced to 12 years.

The abuse in this case took place in the United States, and so any compensation claim would come under the laws of that jurisdiction. However the concept arises of a child abused on the internet, suing those who watch the abuse. The English paedophile in this case was actually convicted of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, which is a crime under Sections 9 to 15 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
